Dreamt last night about talking on the phone to Claire Futamase, a girl I knew in elementary school, and haven't spoken to since I was 12. Or 13. The night before's dreams were spent trying to convince people to help me put out fires in the GLBT Center at the Main Library. Heaven only knows what my subconscious is about, lately.

Have actually made it to the gym in the morning two days in a row. I haven't worked out much to speak of (20 minutes, and 10 of those are cardio), but somehow I'm terribly sore anyway, the kind of sore I associate with flu, not working out. Woe unto me for having quit going to the gym about a month before the wedding. I'm trying to make the gym trips kind of an extension of brushing my teeth, so that I don't feel like I can opt out of going. We'll see whether this works.

I got looked over quite hard by a long haired man (who my brain immediately dubbed razor-man because he looked like a meth addict - in a kind of rugged, my teeth haven't fallen out yet way) outside of what used to be Alfred Schilling's this morning while I was waiting for the F Market. I suppose he might have thought I was someone else, but he actually looked over his shoulder at me repeatedly as he waled down the street. And I really wasn't wearing ANYTHING of note: black shirt and coat, khaki pants, black loafers, no makeup. Anyway, it was unnerving.

This man is running to be supervisor for my district. This is his plan as stated in my voter guide:
Economy of scale provides affordable housing. A new idea. Permanent affordable housing in the city and county of San Francisco. But first shelter for the homeless. And what better way than to tunnel under Nob Hill that will benefit San Francisco and engage the homeless to health and independence. Imagine a 288 foot tetrahedron, of glass and steel, elevated 36 feet high on the block where you live. Your rent would be $288 a month for 12 years and its paid off. Under this pyramid is a park with lawns and fountains. Under the park, three levels of parking Inside this pyramid 33,776 square feet, allowing for 576 units, each unit 576 square feet. This structure combines beauty with economy of scale. Your input is necessary. 474-DOGS Peace will crown America when you reconnect with General George Washington. Read Mason L. Weems and you will see that this greatest of all men is still with us in this time of terror.
Science fictional housing and Parson Weems*. Some days I love this town . . . but not quite enough to vote for him. *Parson Weems was the guy who wrote the first hagiography of George Washington (i.e. the book with the cherry tree story).

For anyone who is following along this VERY rarely updated page, I thought I should note that James and I got married on September 28, 2002.

Yes, I'm all happy about it and stuff. I will probably post a link to pictures in the coming weeks.

and now, back to your regularly scheduled nothing

Flying in the face of conventional wisdom, a new study shows that children who grow up with pets in the home have a reduced risk of developing common allergies. (Thank god. At least now no one can try to blame my allergies on my much loved childhood pets)

Yesterday's surreal moment:

Eating Mexican Food at the very loud Puerto Allegra on Valencia at 16th (I had a tasty but an inexplicably *red* chile verde; James had fried taco thingies) while a Mexican mariachi guitarist sang Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman." Puerto Allegra is closer than La Quinta (which up Mission a ways), and is a little more hospitable, but the food isn't as good. Both of these places are dives in the Inner Mission; neither seems to get metioned on websites much.

Afterward - on the way to pick up a carshare car to get groceries - James and I stopped by the used bookstore with the cats. Truly, petting the cats was the draw, but in five minutes flat I'd picked up a history of British India, a cultural history about the lives of Southern plantation mistresses, a book about a Jewish family in the Tenderloin around the turn of the century (recommended by a friend in Seattle when I told her how much I'd liked the Tenement Museum in New York), and. . . something else I'm forgetting.

James picked up the catalog for a show we saw at SFMOMA displaying the photography of William Gedney. I recognized his photos of people in rural Kentucky in the mid-60s as soon as James opened the book's pages. They made a huge impression on me at the museum, but then photography exhibitions are the only shows I consistently like at SFMOMA.

Anyway, those kitties cost us $40 in about 5 minutes. Book stores are dangerous for me.

Blog unformatted because of problems with *their* upgrades. I'll redesign someday, after I'm finished sulking over the multiweek downtime and total lack of any sign that blogger intends to fix the bug. [well okay that's a lie. I'm so compulsive that I have to fix it a bit; it's still not quite right, but it's closer. I don't have enough interest to do a redesign right now...]

Pause for a moment and be glad that you are not the mother of Lupita Mendez Arellano, a 3 year old who decided to take off to visit her parents new sister at 4 am in the morning in San Jose this week.

Since when do stories like this make the front page at CNN? Mind you, it's about cats, so I did click through.

Weird interaction for the day:

Eva smiles and nods at black man with dreads, sitting on the hazardous waste bin next to the shoe shine shop on the way to the Library. "You sayin' that justice be equal?" I stop and turn. "Justice?" "Uh-huh" "No. But I wish it were." "You say it shouldn't be equal?" "I'm saying it isn't. But it should be."

Man nods. Eva continues to work.
