Close windows function from 3rd window

I want to know if (how) you can name a window that is called and 
have an alert window or third window close the 2nd and 3rd window.  
We have a "specials" frame with a button that opens a 2nd window.  
That window consists of two links that can take you to other areas 
on the site and I want to be able to close the window from the web 
page rather than from the browser.  I have a close button of the 
main window that is called, but once you click inside the windows 
you loose the ability to close it except form the browser.
Any clues?
