Selection list interaction

Hi,
I have a need to display multiple selection lists where a choice in one 
changes the contents of the other.

Does anyone know if this can currently be done?

I tried functions that essentially

form.selectName.options[0].text = "item 1";
form.selectName.options[1].text = "item 2";

and this has no effect. The select list seems to shiver slightly but the 
text items do not change.  Perhaps I'm imagining it!
